Why Must I Take My Vehicle To A Test Only or Gold Shield Station?
The state of California created the test only program to provide a more "honest" smog check for motorists. Test only stations generally have nothing to gain if your vehicle fails, we can't sell repairs. Previous programs relied heavily on mechanic stations to implement the California smog check program. Some dishonest mechanics ripped off consumers by failing their vehicles and charging for unnecessary repairs.
What's Different About A ''Test Only" Smog?
The actual smog check is the same. Test Only Stations do not perform any repairs, adjustments, or refer motorists to a specific repair location. The check is the same at all licensed smog test stations. Test Only is not a "stricter" test.
What Happens If My Car Fails?
You will receive a VIR (vehicle inspection report) identifying area(s) your vehicle did not pass. You could then take the results to a Test and Repair Station of your choice. Have the necessary repairs performed and return for a retest. It's important to take your vehicle to a licensed smog repair station; they have the tools, test equipment and knowledge to fix it right! What Can I Do To Increase My Vehicle's Chance Of Passing a Smog Check?
Make sure your vehicle is properly warmed up, drive for 10-15 minutes before you arrive. But don't over due it. If a vehicle's engine is too hot, emissions can go up. LEAVE IT RUNNING. If your vehicle was sitting for more than a month fill it with fresh gas. The gas cap is part of the test, check the condition. The rubber o-ring should not be cracked. Tests show up to 100 gallons of gas can be lost per year from a defective/missing gas cap. Most stations can sell you a gas cap in case the cap fails the pressure test. The Check Engine/Service Engine Soon light should not stay on. This light lets you know that your vehicles computer is detecting a fault in the system. If the light is on or coming on while you are driving, get it fixed. A visible MIL will automatically fail the functional part of the test, and the vehicle will most likely fail for high emissions too. In some situations it can be beneficial to perform a smog first, even if the MIL is commanded on. That way your mechanic can repair all problems (if there are more) at one time.
